How to Pack Fragile Items for Safe Transport

Fragile items require special attention during a move. Dishes, glassware, artwork, and decorative pieces can easily break during transport if not packed properly. Understanding the right techniques ensures your cherished belongings arrive at your new home in perfect condition.

Gather the right materials before you begin packing. You'll need sturdy boxes, packing paper, bubble wrap, packing tape, and foam peanuts or kraft paper for cushioning. Quality materials are essential for protecting delicate items during both local and long-distance moves.

Start by selecting appropriately sized boxes. Small boxes work best for heavier fragile items like books, while larger boxes suit lighter items like lampshades and bedding. Never overstuff boxes, as this increases pressure on items and makes boxes harder to stack safely.

Wrap each item individually. Use several layers of packing paper or bubble wrap, depending on the item's fragility. For dishes, wrap them individually and stack them vertically rather than flat. Vertical stacking is stronger and reduces pressure on the bottom pieces. Wrap groups of plates together, then wrap the entire stack as one unit.

Create a cushioning strategy. Place at least two inches of cushioning material on the box bottom. As you add wrapped items, fill gaps with packing peanuts or crumpled paper. Add cushioning on top before sealing the box. This prevents items from shifting during transport.

Label boxes clearly as fragile on multiple sides. Use phrases like Fragile—Handle with Care or This Side Up to communicate proper handling to anyone involved in the move. Clear labeling ensures appropriate placement in the moving truck and careful handling during unloading.

For particularly valuable or sentimental items, consider double-boxing. Place a wrapped item in a smaller box, surround it with cushioning, then place that box inside a larger box with additional cushioning between the two boxes. This double protection is worth the extra effort for heirloom pieces.

Pack fragile items last so they're loaded first into the moving truck. They should be positioned securely where they won't shift during transport. Avoid placing heavy items on top of fragile boxes, no matter how sturdy the packaging appears.

Communicate with our team about your fragile items. Let us know which boxes contain delicate goods so we can give them appropriate attention during loading and transport. Professional movers understand the importance of these items and will take extra care to ensure safe delivery to your new home.
